Dover-Calais survey 18 February

Captain Rogee and his crew were very welcoming as the surveying team settled in on the bridge of the Cote d’Opale ferry from Dover to Calais. Poole-Jersey survey 17 February

One of our first sightings was of a Shag sitting on the sea with its crest up – surely a sign of the approaching breeding season.

The mud flats to the south were rapidly disappearing under the very high spring tide, and the roost areas were already teeming with large numbers of Oystercatcher and Curlew.

Common Gull followed us out of port in good numbers before 35 Brent Geese crossed the bow in v-formation. They fly in gaggles in larger groups, but smaller groups sometimes fly in this shape.

By the time I arrived on the bridge the following day the ship was 25 miles from the Dutch Coast. I was welcomed by the officer on watch and was later greeted by Captain Torben Sekjaer.

Heysham-Warrenpoint survey 1-2 February

Sailing up Carlingford Lough is always a great pleasure, and we were treated to some good views of Black Guillemot, Great Crested Grebe, and Red-throated Diver, before the start of the marine survey at the Haulbowline Lighthouse.
